Trimtrac functionality

How does the Trimtrac exactly work

The Trimtrac is designed to operate in areas where normal GPS receivers would not be able to retrieve a position. There for you can put the Trimtrac in the glove compartment, underneath a chair or any other spot within your car or asset you prefer. Obviously there are limits, thus if the Trimtrac is in an area fully blocked by metal (like a trunk of a car) it will not be able to retrieve it's position. To be sure simply test a few spots to hide the Trimtrac before you rely on it to send it's positions on a regular basis. The Trimtrac sends a Status Message to FindWhere every day to ensure the unit is still operational and the batteries are ok. In normal operation the batteries last for app. 90 days, and you will always see the battery status in your FindWhere account.

The Trimtrac has an internal motion sensor which will trigger a position report. So when the Trimtrac starts moving you will automatically receive a position. The frequency of the positions is set in the unit and ranges from 2 minutes to 24 hrs. You can set this interval yourself from within FindWhere and change it whenever required. In normal tracking mode it might be enough to receive positions every 30 or 60 minutes of your trucks or trailers. However when your asset is stolen you probably want positions as often as possible to see where the thieves are taking your asset.

M: Motion detected : driving
G: GPS fix : motion detected
R: Positioning interval : position fix
: end of motion position fix

The Trimtrac normally "sleeps" (M) untill movement is detected. Once the Trimtrac is moved it wakes up and starts retrieving a position (G). After 1-7 minutes, depending on how strong the GPS signal received is, a position will be send to FindWhere. Even if no position can be retrieved a Status Message will be send to let you know your asset is moving. During the movement the positions will be retrieved with an interval (R) that can be set by you. Once the movement has stopped the Trimtrac will send a "end of motion" position. Since the Trimtrac spends the majority of it's time in "sleep mode" you can not request a position from the unit (polling).

The Trimtrac can also be connected to an external (vehicle) battery through the vehicle adapter. When using a vehicle adapter the Trimtrac does not need to be in "sleep" mode to preserve battery live and thus can be polled. In FindWhere you can now request a position and the Trimtrac will respond with it's current position. Even better is the possibility to connect, up to three, external inputs to the Trimtrac which tell you the status of your truck, car, trailer or boat. For example connect one of the inputs to the car alarm or ignition and you will automatically start receiving positions and alarm messages even when the car is not yet moving.
